A Nile mermaid in Sudd swamp on the way to No, (2013) R.p.Girard, oil on canvas
I was staring at an old map of the Nile when I imaged this clear water break far below where the blue and white Nile now meets at Khartoum. It was deep in Sudd swamp an ancient hidden heavy floating algae isle somewhere strange in time when primordial plants thrived. Nature and human things had shaped rock into alters and a sort of mermaid fish slug hook hand crawler with her head curled up into a nautilus shell so that I feared were she to remove it her porpoise face would then take on an even less human form with multiple eyes and soft perhaps poisonous tendrils.
She was resting there before continuing downstream after having clambered her way upstream along the riverbed to lake No to spawn in the place of her birth and having successfully traveled back though the Bahr el Ghazal (sea of gazelles) to her first stop with baby in tow.

*photo is not an accurate portrayal of the painting…it’s much more of a silvery grey, i adjusted the color slightly on this one to bring out some details which are really still not evident, it is proving annoying to capture, i will resolve it later… for now i offer you this golden version.
